Virginia Creeper

This past weekend we got the clan together and took a trip to Damascus, VA to go camping and ride the Virginia Creeper trail on our bikes.  We took a group of 14 and had a blast.

Aside from the rain we got Friday night and the overcast skies Saturday morning the weather was great, a tad chilly, but a welcome break from the scorching heat we’d been having back home.  We woke up each morning to tasty breakfasts cooked by David one morning & Jerry the next.

Saturday we loaded up the bikes and headed to the Creeper.  After a bit of shuffling we were ready to head down the trail.  At the end of this post is a quick video of the trek.  I’m a bit disappointed in the quality.  It looked a lot crisper before I uploaded it to youtube.  Sigh, silly resolution restrictions.

Anyway, here are some photos from the trip.  Easier for you to click on that link to view them than for me to post a bunch on here.

Here’s the video:

Riding the VA Creeper!

I’m not in a very wordy mood today so this is all the write up you’re going to get.  I’ll post comments/descriptions on the pictures on facebook if you want more deets about the weekend.

Jack and Becky, this is for you (it’s not tooooooo awkward ;-) )!!

Hiya

Off to the beach for yet another day trip.  Woop Woop, we live in a great place I tell ya!

Day Trip

Sometimes random trips to the beach for a day are just what the doctor ordered.

July 4th weekend (yet again…it sure was busy!) loomed with multiple house projects and events scheduled.  I was feeling overwhelmed with all the stuff we had planned and was worried I would be worked to the bone all weekend with little rest, relaxation or fun to enjoy.  Brian graciously indulged my frantic need to get away and we took off Saturday morning for Carolina Beach.

A little en-route entertainment.  Crosswords and Chronicles!

Ahhh, sitting in a chair, reading a book, burying my toes in the sand, soaking in the sun, listening to the waves crash over and over onto the shore.  Shhh, if you listen closely you just might be able to hear it.  I needed it.

What I didn’t need was the sunburn.  I tried, really I did, to avoid over exposure.  But that last trip into the water must have done me in.  I didn’t reapply afterward and my skin screamed at me for it later.  But the call of the water was just too strong.  The waves were great and we had some fun riding them in.

Anyway.  One of the many reasons I love living in Raleigh.  Two hours to the beach, three hours to the mountains.  Just doesn’t get much better than that!

The Dark Side

This is several weeks overdue.  But alas, so are most of my blog posts these days!

We finally, finally, finally finished painting the formal living and dining rooms (over July 4th weekend).  These were the last 3 walls left from the initial painting we had done when we first moved in.  The glaring pink stared at me day in and day out  mocking me with their endurance.  I must say I am not sad to see them disappear.

In case you don’t remember.  Here is the dining room before (well, before we painted, not before we started prepping):

After confirming advice from Sally, we decided that painting all three walls blue to match the blue that runs through the entryway and hallway, up the stairs and down the upstairs hallway would be overwhelming.  So, as you can see from the above picture we decided to make the large wall connecting the living and dining room an accent wall using gray.

IMG_3943  These were our color samples.  We originally picked the gray on the far left and confidently picked up a gallon and painted the entire wall.  Our initial reaction to our choice was mediocre at best and frustrating at worst.  The gray just didn’t do anything for us and even blended in slightly with the opposing blue walls.  I didn’t even bother taking a picture of the completed wall because I knew it wasn’t staying.

We decided to embrace our dark side and boldly paint the wall a dark, dark gray.  So, we  headed to home depot to see if we could tint the existing paint two shades darker on the color swatch we had.  No luck.  The color we initially chose was a white base and the color we wanted to switch to called for a medium tinted base.  Adding black (or whatever they added) barely changed the color at all.  So we bit the bullet and bought a fresh gallon of the new color.  And I’m glad we did.  We painted two coats (because painting with a dark color is a lot different and harder than I’ve experienced before.  It doesn’t cover as easily and you have to make extra certain no little spots show through the layers) and now I am in love with how it turned out!  It looks so fresh, modern and put together.  I like to just sit on my sofa and look at the pretty rooms.  I worried ever so slightly that the gray would be to dark and make the room oppressive.  But it’s not because the tall ceilings, the blue walls and tons of natural light really just help the wall pop!  Red heart

I love the way the white trim pops with the dark gray.  The navy curtains pop against the light blue walls and the floors blend it all together.  Spending two days of a 3 day weekend painting was well worth the effort.

Oh, and while I was inside painting away, Brian was outside graffiti-ing  power washing our sidewalk/driveway.  But he was great and came in to help edge the top of the walls and roll the top half b/c even on a chair I could only reach up to about 8’ of these 10’ walls!

Overall:  Happy with the finished product.  It feels good to be bold!

Oh, and after putting that nice graffiti on the front walkway Brian successfully broke the pull start on the power washer.  I was convinced we were going to have that announcement remain on our sidewalk welcoming all our guests for the foreseeable future.  But he was able to fix the pull start (with the help of his dad) and finish up that and the sidewalk and I must say it looks brand new.  Thanks for your tireless efforts B.Low!

Dress Up

I came across this post from a friend's blog.  It made me laugh and think, "If Sally had a blog when she was raising her kids she would totally have had an entry like this."

Check it out here.

Post about recent activities forthcoming.  Stay tuned.

Red, white & blue

A bit late, but eh.

Independence Day will forever be a special day for me, not because we celebrate our country’s freedom, but because it was this day 4 years ago that Brian asked me to be his wife :).  Thanks, B!!

Anyway, this July 4th weekend didn’t include fireworks.  But it did include lots of painting, power washing, a beach trip and cookout with friends!

We had our friends Craig & Beth over along with Tracy, Rob & Keirsten.  Unfortunately, I didn’t bust out the camera when everyone was here and only snagged a couple pictures from the evening.  I tried to be all Martha Stewart and copied these strawberries I found from a favorite blog I follow.  I think they turned out pretty well.  They tasted great in any case!

Well, after dinner we all piled in the cars to go watch the fireworks!  If you read my intro you know, no fireworks.  The Town of Cary cancelled their firework display because of the major thunderstorm that rolled through that evening.  Oh well, we’ll catch them next year.

We headed back to the house to play some games.  Craig & Beth are gamers, yay!  I love playing games.  So, we busted out Yatzee.  They hadn’t played in years and I think maybe Craig had never played (I may be wrong saying that).  We had a great time and lots of laughs.  The first game was pretty uneventful and no one got a Yatzee.  We were actually kind of surprised because usually at least ONE person gets lucky in a game.  So we decided to play another round before we called it quits for the night.  Well, what little luck we had in the first game was completely reversed in the 2nd.  Craig & Brian both got Yatzees on 3s.  I got Yatzee on 4s.  And Beth got Yatzee on 4s AND 1s.  It was crazy and the reaction each time was hilarious.  We would all throw our hands up yelling OHHH or WOOOW or WOOO.  You get the idea.  Needless to say, the 2nd game was much more entertaining and exciting.

Before we could have folks over, though, we had several major projects we wanted to complete.  I’ll share about that and our beach trip in separate posts.

Now, to leave you with a funny video of Beth posing for the perfect Yatzee “picture”:

What? I’m on video?
